Poor People's Adjustment and Coping Mechanisms

The continued and increasing gap between poor people's levels of income (their capabilities) and the cost of accessing their basic needs, prompted the Centre to carry out a research on how they cope in such instances.

The Adjustment and Coping Mechanisms study was conducted in 2006 by the Social Conditions Research Programme, with a focus on poor people's coping strategies with regard to access to food, health facilities, clean water, cooking and lighting energy, housing and education.

Project Officer: Chrissie Kafundu. Research Assistants: Elasma Milanzi, Madalitso Nyoni, Lususbilo Mwakalagho and Fannie Msimuko. March 2006.

As a beginning of the series on the coping Mechanisms in-depth surveys, the Social Conditions Research Programme conducted a survey in 2007 on access to food: The Impact of the Bumper Maize Yield on Rural People's Coping Mechanisms - see below.

Project Officer: Chrissie Kafundu. Assisted by Hastings Kafundu (Economic Justice and Good Governance Programme Officer) and Fr. Robert Videde.

In 2008, the Programme will conduct a survey on poor people's access to health.
